SAND DOLLAR and ORTHOCERAS ON BASE
SAND DOLLAR
A quite charming sand dollar in full intact form.
Found embedded in a hard sandstone and quartzite matrix it makes for a fabulous early collectors piece as the edges are clean and distinct as is the natural patternation on the surface. Small segment crazing but that is normal. Will look the part in a cabinet or it can be sat out on a shelf but it should not be exposed to excessive damp.
Sand dollars (order Clypeasteroida) are flat, round marine animals related to sea urchins (echinoids), sea stars, and other echinoderms. A sand dollar has a rigid skeleton, or test, and the term sand dollar also refers to this test when it is found as a sand dollar's remains. When sand dollars are living, they have a skin of moveable spines covering the entire form. Like its close relative the sea urchin, the sand dollar has a set of five pores arranged in a petal pattern. The pores are used to move sea water into its internal water-vascular system which allows the creature to move.

ORTHOCERAS ON BASE
A very interesting Orthoceras that has not been too heavily polished and has had the slate base trimmed back to a reasonable level so that it can show off the form of the fossil cleanly. This very attractive piece will make for an interesting desk garnish or a substantial collectors lot. From a home décor point of view it can be mounted under lights or embedded into a garden or bathroom wall.
Orthoceras was an ancient mollusc that lived more than 400 million years ago.
The name means straight horn, referring to the characteristic long, straight, conical shell. The preserved shell is all that remains of this ancestor of our modern-day squid.
These straight shelled Nautiloids ranged in size from less than a centimetre to more than 14 feet long!
