ammpairA very beautiful and details ammonite that has been split and the faces polished to bring out the colour and lustre.

This particular pair are from Madagascar which is a rich hunting ground for fossil enthusiasts. They are of the finest quality and have lovely burgundy hues to them and small crystalline crevasses. A most unusual and charming gift for a collector or as a room décor item.

Ammonites are an extinct cephalopod that lived from the Devonian Period through the Cretaceous Period. They were most abundant during the Mesozoic. The name comes from its appearance: it resembles a ram's horn. In Egyptian mythology, the God Ammon looked like a man with horns like a ram. The ancient fossil was considered Ammon's stone, thus inheriting the name, ammonite.

GIANT AMMONITE (NATURAL)

giantThis enormous Ammonite is from Madagascar and is still in it's natural, uncut and unpolished state. On the back, hardened sediment outlines where a smaller one rested.

Ammonites of this size are referred to as Titanites and come from the Jurrasic period.
With it's beautiful natural sand hues, it looks amazing under spot lights and would makes quite a statement in any home.

The ammonites became extinct at the same time as the dinosaurs about 65 million years ago.
