These truly lovely bookends are made of petrified wood other wise known as fossilized wood. What you are looking at though is actually quartz. All fossil wood is actually the form of the dead wood that has been taken over by the mineral growth of quartz, effectively turning wood to stone. The process is called 'pseudomorphosis'. and it is remarkable as the smallest detail is perfectly preserved by the slow take over of the crystal.

This pair of book ends are taken from a half cut of a trunk and make a beautiful and very unusual gift.
